Preparing the skin:

A lightweight cleanser can be used to prepare the skin. Skin will instantly look hydrated. After apply a golden/ radiant primer to lock in any qmoisture and create a base for the foundation. Beauty balms will give a soft finish, otherwise a tinted moisturiser mixed with a small amount of foundation will give the skin a glowing youthful appearance. Again a buffer brush is good to use. A flat brush can be used to further blend the product into the skin. For the outer edges of the face use a small amount of foundation mixed with a concealer (dark) for a little more coverage. Keep the foundation on the outer edges of the face, tinted moisturiser should be the sole focus for the centre of the face. Use another buffer brush to blend the two together. After, allow the make up to settle on the skin and work on the eyes in the meantime.

Eyes:

Pro tip: avoid high pigmented or shiny eyeshadows... A matte eyeshadow is flattering on a mature skin, you dont want to highlight this area with glitters. Use complimentary colours across the lid, similar to the models skin tone. Satin or matte textures are preferable and a shadow(chocolate brown) will sit under the eye area without looking too harsh. Plenty of mascara will lengthen the lashes and give a wide eyed appearance.  Apply a natural colour over the whole lid first. After, use neutral colours and matte browns to contour and emphasise the eyes, look at your models skin and eyes before choosing your colours. Only apply the darker colour on the outer corners of the eye and avoid over applying colour. After apply minimal product under the eye as a liner- matching the darker eyeshadow colour. Applying mascara with a small wand brush will ensure length as you will closely reach the lash line. Cream products wont set and powder under the eyes, a minimal amount with a good blending brush will brighten the under eye area naturally.  Brow gel with colour is good for a model who doesnt like a heavy brow or isnt used to applying product in the brows.

Mature Skin  |  Fashion Work: Freelance: 29 Oct

I work freelance for some of the boutique stores in bournemouth and london when they showcase their fashions in different venues. On this occation all of the make ups were mature skin from the age of 60+. I primed the skin with cream highlighters and anti ageing lotions before applying any foundations (mac primer) (ellizabeth arden moisturiser) the skin looked flawless and the highlighter brought a fullness to the models cheeks.

Models Age: 67. Below: Before Make Up (Wearing false eyelashes). Right: During the show. All of the make ups were done by myself.

Below: Highlights from the show.

Contouring isnt necessary as such. Mineralise powders are good for mature skin because they are so fine and plump the skin.

A blusher with a high shine will plump the cheeks along side a cream highlighter which will add radiance and glow. Avoid sparkle and larger pigmented blushers - they will settle where you dont want them to.

Lips: line the lips after speaking to your model, ask them what they like and consider their colour preference. Do not over draw with lipliner but define the edges clearly. This will stop any bleeding and create a defined definite shape. Choose warm colours on the lips and a small amount of gloss in the centre of the lips will give a plump/ fuller appearance.

The model asked me to apply her own lipstick (EsteeLauder Rose Gold). The colour she has worn for many years. I added a Mac high shine lipgloss to coat the lipstick and bring fullness to the lips. I also lined the lips with a NARS lipliner to match the lipstick. I used a highlighter pencil above her lips to draw attention to her philtrum, making the top lip appear plump.

Mature Skin  |  Lisa Eldridge

Lisa eldridge talks you through the application of make up on mature skin. I found this video extremely helpful, she talks about the importance of prepping the skin and to not 'over apply' the make up, enhance the models age and bring youth to the skin with highlighters and creams. I watched this video before the fashion show I worked for and it gave me great confidence in the application process at the event.
