TOY STORY

INITIAL INFLUENCE

Commentary:

When we started this whole idea we thought computer graphics seemed plasticky anyways and decided to make a movie on toys.

Ages 3 and up its on my box, ages three and up. Mr potato head- one of the characteristics of the toy is that it is constantly loosing its parts, we definitely thought it would have a chip on its shoulder.

Don Ripples was the only choice for this character.

In creating and manufacturing toys they are made to be played with by a child, they can look at being played with as their job. Naturally you would have staff meetings

Mr potato head takes off his lips and presses them against his back side. Adult humour, he uses his facial features in a comical adult way. Here his features are taken off and he is left with a small hole.

The Legacy:

First computer animation feature film ever made , first Pixar film, the characters felt alive and collided with each other in real and touching ways.

Brad bird

"Appealed to both children and adults"

Peter Jackson

"It's full or real and little ironic twists on your own problems in life"

Roy e Disney

"It's characters are adults and jealous"

Peter sohn:

"Actual people with depth and there are many layers to the characters"

Jojo Ramos:

"When you look inside toy story you see a truth about what it is like to face loyalty , what its like to be in service , what its like to be an adult and cope with adversity"

Thomas Schumacher:

"The fact that these commercial items had emotional investment and connections with us was a really canny idea."

Brad bird:

"The thinking character, that's what's fascinating about it. They can communicate distress just through there eyes"

John cane maker:

"In the most traumatic parts of the movie they are not saying anything , they communicate through there expressions"

Making Toy Story:

The holy grail of computer graphics, typically a disney film is to remake fairytales

Mr Potato Head:

"His facial features fall off and thats where his personality comes from, you would be angry if your features kept falling off." John Lasseter

Design:

Mr potato head was and remains the most influential character towards my design concept for the make up application. He demonstrates the unique ability to separate his body parts from his plastic body. He has eyes, pink ears, a red mouth, an orange nose, black eyebrows, a black mustache and a pair of angry eyes.

Notes from Book:

The personalities that were created where compelling and people could relate to the concepts, especially adults. ‘If a toy had a life, what would its concerns and issues be? What would it want?'

Hauser, 2009. P.13

I felt asthough this quote was very relevant to my design ideas and fits the concept of 'playing with your own features, a puzzlepiece, almost toy like.'

Ever sarcastic and always ready to think the worst of people, Mr. Potato Head is not the most popular of Andy’s playthings.

Design Relation:

Mr and Mrs Potato Head are both potato-shaped toys, their patented design allows them to separate their detachable parts from their bodies by removing them from the holes on the body.

They also have a compartment on their lower backs to store extra appendages, see screenshot above. They are the only toys shown to be capable of retaining control over their own parts even if they are several centimetres away from their bodies, The toy is designed to be taken apart, unlike many other types of toys. For example, in one particular scene, Mr Potato head looks through his eyes, when they are detached from his head. He can still see if his detachable eyes are removed, through the eyes, as well as being able to move his hands and legs if they are detached.

He is able to take his eyebrows apart, however, when he is seen throughout each film with only one eye, there is no hole for the eyebrow part. In my design, I will incorporate the eyebrows so that they are fixed to the models face.
